Aesthetix USB Interface Audio Driver

California-based Aesthetix has carved out an enviable niche producing the Romulus can accept a digital input in a variety of formats including USB. boards to allow future upgrades as new interfaces become available. Apple's USB Prober utility identified the Romulus as "Aesthetix USB Interface" from the "Aesthetix Audio Corporation," with the serial-number. Aesthetix is proud to introduce the Pandora and Romulus. around the world for outstanding performance, build quality, and user interface. USB is capable of Class 1 audio up to 96KHz / 24bit and Class 2 audio up to KHz / 24bit.

Aesthetix USB Interface Audio Driver

Two separate transformers and three linear regulation stages are added to further isolate the transport mechanism from the rest of the digital-to-analog converter. High Resolution Volume Control Optional An optional high resolution relay-based volume control may be added to either Pandora or Romulus, allowing Aesthetix USB Interface Audio units to directly drive a power amplifier, ideal for many systems.

The volume control for Pandora and Romulus is very special.

Typical digital products control volume entirely in the digital domain, where every 6dB Aesthetix USB Interface Audio volume attenuation causes a loss of 1 bit of resolution. This means since most listening is done in the dB range, if one were playing a CD with 16 bit resolution and attenuating at 30dB, only 11 bits of resolution would remain, an incredible loss. The Pandora and Romulus volume control prevents all resolution loss by operating partially in the digital domain for small 1dB steps and partially in the analog domain using relay-based switched resistors for large 6dB steps.

Using this method, eighty-eight 1dB steps are created with zero loss of resolution. Existing Romulus and Aesthetix USB Interface Audio units are factory upgradable to Signature. The entire DSP processing section is replaced pictured above, click to enlarge.

The new section includes an advanced Xilinx gate-array which allows the DSP to be completely bypassed for pure DSD 1x and 2x operation. No alteration of DSD data occurs. Vishay Z-Foil Resistors In addition Aesthetix USB Interface Audio the DSP processing section, an entirely new analog board is installed pictured above, click to enlarge.

Extremely low noise, high linearity Vishay Z-foil audio resistors are utilized in the critical current-to-voltage conversion stage pictured above, click to enlarge.

Dynamicaps As in all Saturn Signature products, critical coupling capacitors are replaced with Dynamicaps from Peter Moncrief. Four are installed between the vacuum-tube gain stage and output stage, all in full differential mode.

These provide increased resolution, less grain, greater high frequency extension and naturalness, all while maintaining the basic strengths of Romulus' tonal balance. The eight 2uF output capacitors are replaced with 4uF Dynamicaps which provide greater resolution in addition to improved bass Aesthetix USB Interface Audio, drive and dynamics. And one more factor discourages owners of high-end systems from using music files.

It seems that even the best labels still aren't ready to author files properly in particular for hi-res versions. Most of them learnt by now how to produce a very good sounding CD but music files seem to remain terra incognita with many traps waiting along the road to good sound.

These are high-end machines for high-end systems. What's interesting is that the latter comes in two versions, with and without CD transport.

That costs around If you mean to keep spinning CDs, go with the Teac transport which adds Aesthetix USB Interface Audio. Then you'll have a transport and DAC in one box. The player's frequency response with CDs is shown as the gray and green traces in fig.

Some passband ripple is evident above 10kHz cyan and magenta tracesbut this is absent from the response with 96 and kHz external data blue and red. Channel separation at 1kHz was a good 95dB in Aesthetix USB Interface Audio directions, but decreased, due to the usual capacitive coupling between channels, to 70dB at 20kHz not shown. However, as can be seen in fig.

The output section also has separate discretely regulated positive and negative supplies which are completely isolated from the voltage gain power supplies. Power Supplies As with every Aesthetix product, Pandora power supplies received tremendous attention.

The Ultimate Guide to Audio Interfaces

If a single transformer is used to supply all the necessary voltages and currents in a product, digital noise is allowed Aesthetix USB Interface Audio easily traverse the transformer windings through stray capacitance and pollute the delicate analog sections. Separate windings help, but only a little.

The real solution is separate transformers, where no interaction can occur between windings. Individual digital sections are further locally regulated to isolate them from each other.
